The National Tramway Museum

The National Tramway Museum is a spectacular collection of ‘trams throughout history’. The place is inspiring and engaging. Trams are maintained in an industrial workshop in full view from the safe gallery in The George Stephenson Discovery Centre. Preservation and conservation work enable rides on different trams along the mile of track on the open ‘old penny’ ticket.

The Great Exhibition Hall, from where many high quality learning programmes emanate, brings local, national and international perspectives, from horse drawn trams in Victorian times to the mid-20th century and on to the resurgence of contemporary trams. Learning sessions and materials motivate, provoke thinking and inform about many social and engineering themes. The Woodland Walk refers to local engineering achievements. Having fun and learning go hand-in-hand, with appeal to all ages.
