The Great Hall of Oakham Castle is generally accepted as the finest surviving example of Norman domestic architecture in Europe. As such, it has huge local, national and international significance. The main surviving structure is the impressive Great Hall, where banquets and courts were held for centuries. Stunning architectural features, including excellent Norman stone carvings and mouldings are explained by the dedicated team of lively and animated characters. Dressed in relevant costumes, they bring the history of the castle to life with interesting activities and commentary. The impressive collection of giant horseshoes, presented by distinguished visitors, captures the realism of 550 years of personalities in history. The education programme provides outstanding opportunities for school groups to enhance their lessons and for informal learning by others about the heritage of England through imaginative activities. The driving force behind this education programme is that history should be felt, and it is!
